The short answer is that your employer can generally terminate you without any sort of prior notification or explanation.  Virginia is considered an 'at will' employment state.  This means that you can be terminated without a reason, or for any good or bad reason, as long as you were not terminated for an illegal reason (such as discrimination or retaliation).

Ms. Beavers is generally correct.  You indicated, however, that you were employed as an instructor which caused me to wonder whether you were employed by a public school system, or state institution of higher education (college, university, community college, etc.).  If so, then you have certian procedural rights that apply as an employee of a government institution.
Also, persons in an educational settings often have annual contracts that enhance their rights.
Without knowing more about your specific situation I cannot advise you in greater detail.  If you wish to follow up then please contact my office via telephone for consultation.  I may be reached at 540-982-3711, ext. 310, or via email mwilliams@grimesandwilliams.com.
