I lent my ex a substantial amount of money. we agreed on payment plans and i havent received any. its beyond destroying my credit and is now ruining my life.

Only problem is I live in the US and my ex lives in Canada. How can I go about getting all my money and some back??

there is not an easy answer to your dilemma. theoretically you can hire a lawyer perhaps in n jersey or in canada to sue your ex.. however that is going to cost you more money and it sounds like he is a deadbeat. thus you have thrown good money after bad. even if you obtain a valid judgment against him it is just a piece of paper and not worth much unless you can collect it.  without knowing more i would go to plan B and pick up your life assuming the money is gone. maybe someday he/she will feel guilty and try to make amends.  sorry, i know this is not the advice you are seeking.
