Under the legal theory of negligent entrustment, a car owner can be liable for injuries caused by his car if he negligently allows someone to drive the car. For example, if you allowed a minor or an intoxicated person to drive your car, you might be liable for subsequent injuries caused by that driver. But here, your car was stolen, so you did not “entrust” the car to anyone. You perhaps could be liable for the injuries caused only if your own negligent conduct somehow contributed to the car being stolen. But even this this would be a stretch. If you are truly being sued – i.e., if you have been served with a complaint – then you should consult with a lawyer right away, as you are obligated to respond to the complaint within 30 days, and the time and manner in which you respond can affect your rights.
