Repayment on money borrowed to pay rent. does early payment, negate the contract?

My roommate and I had both a verbal agreement and an agreement via text message that states I will pay them back as soon as I "get a job." Now that I have a job (before first full paycheck) they are asking me to pay them back. I obviously do not have the money.
If, I paid a payment (accepted by the roommate,) before for I had a job, does that void our contract?

Obviously I don't have enough information here to give certain advice, but it looks like you gave him some money but not all. That wouldn't void a contract. You still owe the remainder.
Are you looking to get out of paying him back, or just need a couple extra weeks? If it's just a couple weeks, what do you think he's going to do in the meantime? You'll have paid him back before he can sue you or anything like that. Even if he does sue, the payment terms aren't going to be beyond what you can afford. It isn't contested (I don't think?) that you do owe the money.
