It wasn’t what she did outside of prison but what took place within those walls that landed teen inmate Ashley Smith a death sentence, coroner’s court heard Tuesday. An inquest into the young woman’s death inside a segregation cell at Grand Valley Institution in Kitchener, where she tied a ligature around her neck and turned purple while staff watched on Oct. 19, 2007, has begun with an exploration of Smith’s life before she was federally incarcerated.
