Family gets $1.7m over jail death

The family of a man who died after his cancer was left undiagnosed for over a year while he was in prison has been awarded $1.73m. A jury in Los Angeles said state prisons were partly to blame for the death in 2007 of Francisco Castaneda, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador. Castaneda, jailed on drugs charges in 2005, was repeatedly denied proper care for what turned out to be penile cancer, his lawyer said. He died at 36. His daughter will get $1.5m in damages.
