Is a Special Border Patrol Court System Violating Civil Rights?
|
Mon Sep 13, 2010 Along the Mexican border, a special program called Operation Streamline deals with illegal aliens and immigrants and helps get them through the justice system quickly, but is it too fast? Under the system, individuals caught at the border are many times arraigned on the same day. The problem, however, is that individuals are questioned and sentenced not individually, but many times, in groups. This has raised concerns regarding whether the individuals are receiving proper legal counsel prior to their pleading. The 9th Circuit recently ruled that parts of the program violated the rules of criminal procedure, which resulted in changes. |
