Schwarzenegger Asks for Same-Sex Marriages to Resume
|
Mon Aug 9, 2010 California's Attorney General and Governor Schwarzenegger both have asked for California to resume same-sex marriages after the ban on same-sex marriages was struck down last week. Last week, Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriages, was struck down as unconstitutional. Writing on behalf of the Governor, a lawyer wrote to the US District Court "The public interest is best served by... restoring the right of same-sex couples to marry in California . . . [d]oing so is consistent with California's long history of treating all people and their relationships with equal dignity and respect . . ." The case has already been appealed and the issue may end up before the Supreme Court. Schwarzenegger calls for same-sex weddings to resume | BBC News |
