Louisiana Passes Law Requiring Ultrasounds Prior to Abortions
|
Thu Jun 17, 2010 The State of Louisiana will now require that all women seeking to have abortion must have an ultrasound prior to the procedure. The bill passed with a 79-0 vote, and nobody spoke out against the bill. In fact, the bill is less controversial than the original proposal, which would have required women to listen to a description of the fetus that would include its dimensions, and whether appendages or organs are visible. Senator Sharon Broome, who introduced the bill, said that "This is a bill that empowers women . . . ." Testimony before the legislature also claimed that 95% of women who have abortions already have an ultrasound prior to the procedure. |
