Yukon land-claim appeal dismissed by top court

The Yukon government did not breach its duty to consult a First Nation about an agricultural land lease six years ago, Canada's top court has ruled. In a decision released Friday, the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the appeal and cross-appeal from the Yukon government and the Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation, which were in a court battle over the granting of a lease to a prospective farmer in 2004. The territorial government was accused of not properly consulting the First Nation, which has a signed land claim and self-government agreement, before granting the agricultural lease to the farmer. |
