Health Canada to legalize loophole on fortified foodstuffs lacking nutrition labels

Thu May 20, 2010 Canada.com OTTAWA -- There could be hundreds of food and beverage products boosted with vitamins and minerals on shelves across the country with unchecked health claims and no nutritional fact boxes - and Health Canada is now proposing to legalize the loophole that has allowed the food industry to get fortified snacks and drinks to market faster. As long as a food company has applied for a product licence for a "health product in a food format," Health Canada has permitted the sale of these foods and drinks as natural-health products alongside traditional natural-health products awaiting review, such as herbal remedies and supplements.
This practice - dating back to 2004 to deal with a backlog in applications with Health Canada's natural-health products (NHP) directorate - will soon be entrenched into law. Read More: http://bit.ly/a7VnTm |
