Court martial begins for Canadian in Afghan death

Wed Mar 24, 2010 CBC News The court martial for a Canadian soldier charged with murder in the death of a wounded, disarmed insurgent in Afghanistan begins Wednesday in Gatineau, Que. Capt. Robert Semrau, 36, originally from Pembroke, Ont., was charged with second-degree murder after the death in Afghanistan's Helmand province in October 2008. Semrau was leading a mentoring team on a foot patrol with members of the Afghan National Army. While approaching a village, the soldiers came under fire and air support from a U.S. attack helicopter was called in to help dislodge the insurgents.
