New York's Juvenile Prisons in Rough Shape

Mon Dec 14, 2009 New York's juvenile prison system is a state of such disrepair, the state agency overseeing the system has asked family court judges only to send offenders who are considered public safety risks into the prisons. A recent report found physical abuse by individuals running the prisons, along with a failure to help offenders achieve a basic education while imprisoned, among other deficiencies. At one point, the Department of Justice, which conducted the investigation, considered taking over the system. New York's governor is currently taking numerous steps to try and remedy the system.
