In most cases a person charged with simple possession of marijuana of the amount you mention will be offered diversion by the Crown. There are some exceptions. You should go to court on his first appearance date and see whether he is being offered diversion. If not, you may then want to consider a lawyer. If he is offered diversion, no lawyer is required. Your son just has to complete the terms of the diversion successfully and the Crown will withdraw the charge.

I agree that if he is offered Diversion AND your son is in agreement to accepting it, then your son can likely avoid using a lawyer. I do note that Diversion Agreements specify that the client may wish to or should get legal advise before signing the agreement. As such, it would helpful and not be too expensive to hire a lawyer to assist and advise in this process.
Certainly if Diversion is not offered, a lawyers assistance is valuable. You are welcome to contact me directly for a (free) consultation, 416 450 4099.
