claims have been made to social services who apprehended our grandson from our home. we have been our grandson's main (though only legally under social services for his first 6 months) caregiver for the last 4 years. they now treat us like criminals and refuse to do any investigation.

This is not a criminal matter unless you are criminally charged. It sounds like this action may have been solely to get custody. You need to hire a family law lawyer immediately.
