A record of a conviction or discharge (where the accused pleads guilty or the judge finds the accused guilty after a trial), of an adult criminal record is kept in Ottawa for life, unless the person was dealt with as a Young Person, for which different rules apply depending on the circumstances.

Depending on the nature of the offence, a pardon can be applied for to remove the record after 3 to 5 years.

Records of Fingerprints can also be removed in some circumstances where there was not a conviction in court.
