Question about using objects in self-defense

From my understanding, you will be charged if you use any object as a weapon against someone (pipe, screwdriver, baseball bat, wrench, baton, etc. ), even in self-defense. Are all objects treated the same when used as weapons? Ie. would I face more serious charges if I defended myself with a wrench (primary function is a tool) versus say a baton (primary function is a weapon)?
