Can he sue me even if there's no contract involved?

I need some advices. I live in Canada, I already graduate college. I met someone from online and he lives in California, we never met in person. He did majority of my assignments before in exchange of paying him (which I did), but I still owe him some. I am still planning to pay him but it’s tough times, I need to save money to move out. Can he sue me even if I graduated from college, and he lives in California, and we never met in person, and we don’t have any contract (I didn’t sign any contract or something just chatting on Facebook and whatsapp) he just know my name and phone number. I
