Death certificate

My brother passed away and I never knew. He had been estranged for years and we were just getting to know each other when he was found dead in his apt. People tell me if I get his death certificate I would be responsible for any debt he may have left. I’d like to have the certificate to find some closure but I don’t have the money to pay if he had debts. Is it true that I’d be responsible. Thank you
