A young woman I know is involved with a man, who in the past has stolen from her. Since Dec of last year he has been arrested on 8 different dates. Last time a drug was found on him. Also was caught breaking into vehicles and stealing credit and debit cards and selling stolen goods on line. He is apparently in detox. My question is, is he going to escape jail time just because he is getting his drug use under control?

The courts look at numerous factors when sentencing, not just whether the offender is "addressing" an underlying issue of their offending.  The nature of his criminal record would equally play into the assessment as to what sentence is appropriate. Every case is different and there's no way to predict sentencing outcomes.  She can speak to the Crown in charge of the file and get a sense of the sentencing "range" for the case.
