I am being sued by a lawyer even though he was the one that did not meet the terms of our agreement. i have no resources to defend myself.

I hired a lawyer Jan of last
year to represent me in a constructive dismissal case against my employer. We
had a verbal agreement that I would only pay a percentage of whatecver he
recovered for me. There was no contract signed or retainer requested. About 3
months later, he sent me a fee schedule outlining numerous fees that we had not
agreed on. When I complained about the fees, he looked for an excuse to fire me.
Citing that I had not been cooperative when in fact I have numerous emails
requesting follow up and status updates from his firm. They were typically slow
to respond and did not provide much information. He is now suing me for $4,000
for the "work" he did which basically involved sending a few letters to my
employer (4 in total I believe). I can not believe that the court is taking him
seriously but it seems that they are. I am now forced to defend myself against
this man even though I have absolutely no money for legal representation. Thanks
to him and his bad legal advice, I have had no income for over a year and have
reached a desparate financial situation. Is there any way I can defend myself
here and can I sue him for damages?
Optional Information:
State/Country relating to question: Canada
Urgency: High
Level of Detail: High
Sent to Canada Law Experts Today at 10:56

DISCLAIMER: Information in questions, answers, and
other posts on this site ("Posts") comes from individual users, not JustAnswer;
JustAnswer is not responsible for Posts. I understand you are being sued in small claims court. The process there is designed to be easier for self-represented litigants. You will also have some guidance from a judge at a settlement conference, although do not take it as legal advice as the settlementy conference judge does not act in your best interests. You may want to consult a lawyer or a paralegal about details specific to your case. One-time consultations like that can be affordable.
